Adult ADHD Diagnostic Assessments
Do you often feel overwhelmed by tasks that seem “easy”, struggle to stay focused, or find yourself full of ideas and good intentions but unable to follow through? Maybe you have spent years wondering why everyday responsibilities feel exhausting or why you seem to work twice as hard just to keep up.
For many adults, ADHD can show up as forgetfulness, restlessness, emotional overwhelm, or procrastination. An ADHD assessment can help you make sense of these experiences, feel understood, and gain clarity about the support and strategies to move forward.
About the Assessment
The ADHD assessment process is comprehensive and designed to provide a clear, thoughtful understanding of your symptoms, history, and current needs. The evaluation may include a clinical interview, developmental and educational history, standardized rating scales, collateral information when available, and screening for co-occurring concerns that may impact attention, focus, motivation, and daily functioning.
The assessment typically occurs over two to three sessions. During this process, we will explore the symptoms you are experiencing, how they manifest across different areas of your life, and how they may be affecting work, school, relationships, emotional regulation, organization, time management, and self-esteem. Your personal goals will also be discussed throughout the assessment, ensuring recommendations are not only clinically informed but also meaningful and tailored to your life. The goal is for you to leave the process with greater clarity, language for your experiences, and a stronger sense of control over your next steps.
ADHD Diagnostic Assessment vs. Neuropsychological Testing
Both diagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations can help determine whether someone meets criteria for ADHD or Autism, but they serve different purposes.
At Twin Roots, we provide diagnostic evaluations. These are focused assessments designed to answer a specific question, such as whether you meet criteria for ADHD or Autism. They typically take 1–4 hours over one to two sessions, with diagnostic documentation provided afterward.
Neuropsychological evaluations are more comprehensive and assess a broader range of cognitive, learning, and emotional functioning. They can take several hours across multiple sessions and typically include a detailed written report.
If you're primarily seeking an ADHD diagnosis and documentation, you’re in the right place!
Similarities:
Both a neuropsychological evaluation and a diagnostic evaluation can let you know if you have ADHD or Autism.
Both are performed by mental health professionals and provide documentation.
Differences:
The biggest differences are cost, time, and the specificity of who can take and administer the tests.
Neuropsychological evaluations can last 2 to 10 hours and are typically completed over several sessions. The evaluations provide detailed reports on the tests conducted and are always conducted by clinical psychologists.
Diagnostic evaluations typically last between one and four hours and are completed in one to two sessions. A signed diagnosis letter is typically provided after this evaluation; however, some professionals may also provide a written report.
Diagnostic evaluations focus on a particular condition, like ADHD or Autism.
Neuropsychological evaluations test for a wide range of conditions, including reading, attention, intelligence, reasoning, and mood disorders.
